San Pellegrino has unveiled the South East Asian (SEA) regional winner of the Young Chef 2015 semi-finals. At a high-energy challenge, Kirk Westaway, the Sous Chef from the restaurant ‘JAAN’ inSingapore emerged with the top score among 10 young chefs from the region. The 10 semi-finalists from the region presented their signature dish to celebrated chefs André Chiang, Ryan Clift and Gaggan Anand. Kirk Westaway will represent SEA in the grand finals held during the Expo Milano 2015 in June and be one of 20 regional finalists competing for the prestigious title of S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2015.
Originally hailing from the South West coast of England, Kirk has cultivated his craft in Michelin star restaurants in London, Australia and Brazil before his current stint at JAAN, Singapore. His signature dish, Forest Pigeon caught the eyes of the judges who evaluated the contestants based on the five golden rules of ingredient selection, skills, genius, beauty and message.
“This definitely came as a surprise to me, but a great one! The competition was strong and I was up against some amazing talent. The S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2015 competition has given me the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the region’s most esteemed names in fine cuisine and the experience invaluable,” said Kirk Westaway.
In the coming months, Kirk will be mentored by a celebrated culinary artist who will guide him in his journey to the finals. In addition to the opportunity to compete on the world stage, he will collaborate with a young fashion designer, handpicked by Vogue Italia, who will work on a fashion creation inspired by his signature dish.
