Pink Dot, the annual gathering for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, took place without incident at Hong Lim Park on Saturday evening.
Organisers engineered a surprise this year.
Instead of the usual pink dot, a blue heart emerged when participants turned on their torches at about 8pm.
Organisers said an estimated 26,000 people took part in the gathering this year, breaking last year’s record number of 21,000.
This is the sixth year Pink Dot was held, but the first time it has prompted a protest by some Muslim and Christian groups, who started a social media movement against the event.
Both the National Council of Churches and the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) have since urged their communities to show restraint.
The event started in the late afternoon, with participants in pink gradually filling up the park with picnic mats, pets, and photo-taking.
