The Health Promotion Board, Singapore teams up with popular clubs like ZIRCA to combat the issue of health-damaging binge drinking amongst young adults. Celebrities like Joanne Peh and Pornsak lent their star power for this initiative at Zirca last evening. So, be the “Last Man Standing” – coming to a watering hole near you soon.
Binge drinking is when a person drinks copious amounts of alcohol (five drinks or more) in one night.
Fans cheered their favourite stars on as they battled mixing various ingredients to create the wackiest (and hopefully digestible) concoctions.
Standing tall in the middle of the clubbing district of Clarke Quay and making its appearance for the second year was the eye-catching mega breathalyser, complete with blinking lights. Club patrons were encouraged to check their blood alcohol content. Depending on how much they indulged in that night, they could rank anywhere from ‘Last Man Standing’ (completely sober) or ‘Drunkensteined’ (mostly high, not dead across the floor drunk).
So, what is the worst that can happen when one is dead drunk? You could get mugged, and ladies, you might get taken advantage of and wake up with no clue of what happened the night before.
Mediacorp artiste Pornsak had a good laugh recalling a time he binge drank.
“When I’m drunk, I have no memory! On my 21st birthday, my parents flew me and a group of friends home to Thailand. We had quite a crazy party at my place and….that’s all I can remember!”
Joanne Peh had some advice. She said: “Binge drinking isn’t cool. The effects usually come and hit you much later on. Think twice; don’t use alcohol as an excuse to ‘drown your sorrows’. Channel your competitiveness such as challenging one another, seeing who can hold their liquor better, elsewhere, maybe in school work or other pastimes. It’s a lot more productive and healthier.”
