Oracle CEO Buys Hawaii’s Lanai Island

How’s this for the ultimate big-ticket purchase? Oracle Corporation CEO Larry Ellison has bought over 98 percent of the island of Lanai. The remaining two percent not owned by Ellison is controlled by state, county and private residents.

Now, for a quick overview of Ellison’s latest toy: Lanai is home to some 3,200 residents, as well as nearly 50 miles of breathtaking coastline. Oh, and here’s another cocktail conversation-starter: the acquisition of the near-pristine island will make Ellison the world’s sixth richest billionaire.

Ellison, a Silicon Valley magnate who has previously bought over an entire tennis tournament just to keep it within the United States, has not disclosed his plans for his latest purchase—although given the man’s eccentric proclivities, one can dream of a real-life Jurassic Park
