Winner of the 2015 Red Dot Award for product design, the Lumio lamp takes the familiar form of a book and creates a mesmerizing sculptural light when it is open. Lumio was born of a desire to give people the experience of beautiful lighting wherever they are: a design unconstrained by space or power source. When the book opens its diaphanous pleated interior, which is made of durable water resistant Tyvek pages, is illuminated by high-performing LED. Its minimalist compact form allows for maximum portability, creating a beautiful and functional, flexible lighting solution.
Named one of the ‘Top 10 Most Innovative Crowdfunded Companies’ by Entrepreneur magazine in 2013, Lumio was brought to life by 5,276 backers on Kickstarter, raising nearly US$580,000 in total, well above the initial $60,000 goal. Lumio is designed by architect and designer Max Gunawan. His work employs minimal and clean-line design, and centers around optimizing the use of small spaces. Max has been covered by numerous publications from the Wall Street Journal to the SF Chronicle, and recently spoke at TEDx conference. Born inJakarta, he is currently based in San Francisco.
