Rayson Tan knows the craft of storytelling (the kind that and proves it in his Spring-Summer 2014 Collection by invoking a kaleidoscope of worlds to whimsical results. The Singaporean designer once again demonstrates his knack for piecing together complex pattern-making.
Entitled ‘Till Genesis Comes’, Rayson invites us down the rabbit hole into an enchanted aviary donned with rampant flora. As if to hint of a dream-like state, his exits string together an utterly magical prose; permitting us to peer inside a mandala that harbours his creative subconscious.
L’ile Aux Ashby emphasizes the element of fantasy, possibly taking its roots in the accessible wardrobe of a present-day sprite. Never one to settle for predictability, Rayson exercises his craft through calculated juxtaposes between colour blocks and patterns, self-referencing previous collections in a fresher colour palette.
The collection presents a hodgepodge of hard and soft fabrics, straddling between lucidity and decadence. Getting a full appreciation of L’ile Aux Ashby requires one to stretch out your neck in complete concentration.
Failing to do so would have been to miss the plethora of pattern offerings. Sprawling bird motifs and artful assembling of layers would dodge the lazy eye. The graphical aspect of L’ile Aux Ashby’s narrative is a befitting collection for this generation of audacious dressers.
