The Regium Waterfront project in Italy, undertaken by world-class architect Zaha Hadid, is set to place the city of Reggio Calabria as a cultural capital.
Featuring Zaha Hadid’s signature style of fluid lines and radial symmetry, the Regium Waterfront project includes the Museum of the Mediterranean History and a performing arts center. The buildings will sit on the narrow sea strait separating continental Italy from Sicily, and will be visible from the Sicilian coast.
Inimitably designed yet delectably functional, the buildings were inspired by the organic shapes of a starfish. The radial symmetry of its design is aimed to ease communication and circulation between different sections of the museum and its other facilities.
The Museum of Mediterranean History will house exhibition spaces, restoration facilities, an archive, an aquarium and a library.
The performing arts center is a multi-functional space comprising three wings surrounding a partially covered “piazza”. In addition to three auditoriums, it will also house the museum’s administrative offices, a gym, local craft laboratories, shops and a cinema.
