Andy Warhol’s iconic “Big Campbell’s Soup Can with Can Opener (Vegetable)” is leading Christie’s upcoming New York sale when it is expected to fetch up to $50 million.

Painted in 1962 just before Warhol’s work glorifying everyday objects became world famous, it is a seminal piece of pop art. In his lifetime Warhol painted 11 large soup cans and all but three are housed in museums, making this piece highly collectible.

“It’s an incredibly important, very iconic work,” said Laura Paulson, the auction house’s post-war and contemporary art deputy chairman. “When he painted the soup can picture… it changed the course of art history. No one had seen anyone do anything like this.”

Another highlight of Christie’s Contemporary Art sale is Roy Liechtenstein’s “Ohhh… Alright…” (below) which is expected to fetch $40 million.

The auction will be held in New York on November 11.
