Malcom Forbes’ legendary toy collection raked in $2.3 million when it was recently sold through Sotheby’s.
One of the highlights of the auction was a three-foot-long replica of the Lusitania which fetched $194,500 – a record price for a toy boat at auction. The late publisher had bought the replica of the ocean liner in 1983 for $28,600.
Another key piece was an Exotic Clockwork Gunboat Attributed to Märklin/Rock and Graner which went for $134,500 as well as an original Monopoly game set of circular design, handmade by Charles Darrow, that fetched $146,500.
Completing the line-up were two rare sets of exceptionally detailed medieval knights produced in the 1930s which netted $15,000.
