It’s official: short is in. Hairdressers, in particular, have been kept busy, with requests by customers for variations on the cropped coiffures sported by these two reigning young stars of Hollywood – Emma Watson and Justin Bieber.

The Wall Street Journal has even gone so far as to declare the two young’uns to have “the most influential haircuts of 2011”. Where’s the evidence, you may protest. Well, take it from the WSJ: “The enthusiasm plays out online, where the fastest-rising searches for celebrity haircuts on Google are for Ms. Watson and Mr. Bieber.”

While Justin’s floppy-haired fringe has been seen on any number of rising male stars – Zac Efron’s another prime candidate – it’s the popularity of Emma Watson’s pixie cut among young girls that may be more significant, given that long, luscious curls used to be the de rigueur standard of beauty. Will 2012 usher in a new era of girlish tomboyishness? Watch this space.
