The Thermes Marins Spa, of the Ayana Resort and Spa Bali, has launched a set of unusual treatments based on wine therapy products.

“The culture of drinking wine for health has been cultivated for many centuries and dates back to 6000 BC, so it was only a matter of time before we discovered the aesthetic benefits of wine,” said Michi Sonoda, the Director of Thermes Marins Bali. “We are delighted to be the only spa in south-east Asia to offer this innovative and highly effective Wine Therapy.”

The two newcomers are a Wine Body Treatment and a Wine Facial, both of which promote youthful-looking skin. They use the enologist series of wine therapy developed in Hokkaido, Japan, that was first discovered by the Japanese sommelier Makoto Abe. He then developed and perfected the therapy with the help of a research team from the Tokyo University of Science.

The main ingredients are wine dregs leftover from the mashed grapes, proanthocyanidin (a natural anti-oxidant) and ELGS complexes. They contain various nutrients that are by-products of the winemaking process, including grape seed oil, grape flesh, grape juice, grape leaf extracts, glucoses, tartaric acid, wine and grapevine extract.

The Wine Body Treatment begins with a Grape Skin Cleansing Oil body massage before leading on to a Grape Masque body wrap. Meanwhile, the facial treatment uses grapeseed products to restore suppleness, enhance circulation and eliminate toxins.

Thermes Marins Spa offers a comprehensive 2-hour treatment session (US$700++ per couple, or US$400++ per person) finished off with a wine-filled, flower bath.
