One of Andy Warhol’s most iconic works, Double Elvis (Ferus Type), is expected to fetch US $50 million when it hits the auction block in May.

According to Sotheby’s, the 1963 painting epitomises the pop art pioneer’s obsessions with fame, stardom and the public image.

Dressed as a cowboy with a gun in hand, Presley is depicted as “a Hollywood icon of the sixties rather than the rebellious singer who shook the world of music in the sixties,” an expert from Sotheby’s say.

The ‘Double’ refers to the shadowy image to the left.

Warhol’s works include some of the most expensive paintings ever sold. His ‘Green Car Crash (Green Car Burning),’ also from 1963, went under the hammer for a staggering US $71.7 million in 2007.
