In a controversial turn of events, a former WW2 concentration camp in Montenegro is being transformed into a luxury resort.

Mamula, an island off the coast of Montenegro, was used during World War II by Benito Mussolini to imprison 2,300 people where 130 were executed or starved to death. Mussolini was a notorious Italian dictator who founded fascism. Half a century later, the present Government has decided that it’s time to move on, approving a series of plans to turn the fortress into a luxury resort.

Swiss-Egyptian developer Orascom plans to invest $16.3 million in the project, and was granted a 49-year lease. The planned resort is said to feature swimming pools, a yacht marina, spas, restaurants and a dance floor; a stark contrast to the nightmare camp that it was once.

The move sparked outrage and controversy across the nation and even worldwide, especially angering those whose family members have been prisoners or victims of the infamous camp.
