Juan Martin Nero of La Dolfina
La Dolfina defended their title at the Rolex-sponsored 118th Argentine Open Championship Final, in a 16-10 victory over Ellerstina. We caught the games in the run-up to this match and both these teams were the best in the tournament.
Reigning champion La Dolfina didn’t disappoint, displaying a strong team defense that limited Ellerstina’s shots on goal. Penalties were the bane of the young Ellerstina team – and one that La Dolfina gladly took advantage of – as they gave up seven goals from fouls.
Though in a new configuration this year, the determined Ellerstina team put up a strong battle against La Dolfina, cutting into the opponent’s lead during the fifth chukker with a score of 9-6. Yet, all was lost as La Dolfina opened the seventh – and second to last – chukker with four consecutive goals.
Adolfo Cambiaso, scoring a total of nine goals was awarded MVP, while Facundo Pieres, recording eight goals was named the leading scorer in Open play.
