Despite reports that the Asian financial markets have slowed down in the latter half of 2012, it seems as if the horological market is doing as well as ever, what with the slew of new stores that seems to be popping up everywhere around town.
The latest: IWC Schaffhausen’s new boutique at Pacific Place, Hong Kong. Hosted by managing director of North-east Aia Benoit de Clerck, friends of the brand Julian Cheung, Francis Ng, Michael Wong, Shawn Yue, Wyman Wong, Hanjin Tang and Yumiko Cheng were invited to the opening bash on October 26.
To celebrate the opening, the watch brand also stages an exhibition at LGI Garden Court in the mall, dedicated to showcasing iconic models from the Pilot line. More than 70 years of this family’s history are highlighted, ranging from the very first Pilot’s watches of the 1930s and 1940s to the 2012 collection. Noteworthy models include the Big Pilot’s watch, launched in 1940 and featuring the 52 T. S. C. pocket watch calibre, and the Mark 11, originally built for the Royal Air Force in 1948 and have since adorned the wrists of numerous pilots.
