A jovial setting in the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui, the Chin Chin Bar is the ideal place for whisky aficionados or amateurs alike to sit back, relax and appreciate fine single malts. Already a favourite spot for locals and expats, what amazes is an astonishing array of the amber liquid served in an ambience worthy of Scotland’s finest.
Recently refurbished with the extension of a new terrace, it’s an endearing place where a nostalgic ‘loungey’ feel continues to linger. Former patrons will experience a distinct sense of déjà vu when they walk in, noticing pieces such as the stacked Chinese cupboards recreated behind the bar.
Thanks to its extensive selection of fine wines and spirits, including its exquisite range of blended and single malt whiskies, the place has always been revered. They boast 80 distinct bottles in their arsenal; but now it’s the flight of exceptional malts that will prove the major draw for whisky connoisseurs.
Leading the way is arguably the most precious whisky in the world, The Macallan, which will be offered in two unique styles. The Sherry Oak 12 Year, “a big, bold and rounded whisky” as described by the late and highly respected Michael Jackson offers a rich golden colour, rimmed with a pleasing sniff of vanilla and hints of sweet ginger. When it swirls on your palate it delivers rich dried fruits, reminiscence of sherry and teasing wood smoke before leaving you with a note of viscous, delicious toffee.
The other expression of The Macallan gracing the flight is the Fine Oak 12 Year. Smooth, delicate and complex; with a rich straw hue it summons a flurry of vanilla and fresh fruit on the nose, yet on the palate it adds a touch of oak and spice that will linger with you long into the night.
The Glenrothes, so dearly treasured among whisky blenders as a secret potion, features here the unique Vintage 1998. It’s such a special single malt that Glenrothes frugally allows only 2% of their whiskies to carry its label. Finally you’ll be treated to Highland Park, a boutique single malt, enviably looked upon by whisky makers. Described as “The Best Spirit in the World” by renowned critic Paul Pacult, the 12 Year begins with a nose of heather honey sweetness and peaty smokiness before teasing the taste buds with a full malt delivery.
With live music played every night, a comfy, cosy setting, and probably some of the finest wines and spirits known on earth, it all makes for an utterly heavenly experience.
