Thomas Wee used blossoming flowers as a starting point for his Spring Summer 2014 at Digital Fashion Week 2013. He presumably claimed this more as a “resort” range rather than a complete seasonal collection.
He probably has known, in the wake of 2014’s Chinese New Year, that these stunning pieces will make an impression at any festive gathering (not to mention pleasing the old matriarch sitting on the family throne).
Amidst notable headlines at Digital Fashion Week, Wee’s showcase was deemed one of the great comebacks of this season. Wee had sent out a dozen dresses paying homage to the flower amongst the thorns: roses.
This is a romanticized view of the months to come, to be sure, one far engaged in a penchant for sweeping romances as much as the festivities. And in terms of fashion, that vision proved compelling for the Asian at heart, noticeably with an extensive use of red in the fabric selections.
Credit for that goes to the rather elaborate brocade pieces distilled to petite culottes or an oversized blouson. This outing was made for a brief interlude during any screening of Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood For Love with a final walk down the aisle by Devyn Abdullah in the blood red cascading skirt matched with rose-print obi.
Quite few would venture where Wee has with the updating of classical Asian high collars and sum-fu blouses. Wee is back at what he does best. And in a tall order that might prove amorous to first-time audiences, his fans are testament of this putting them in the mood for love.
