Iconic Hong Kong hotel The Peninsula celebrated 85 years of being an integral part of the city’s local culture and history with a glamorous gala on December 11, 2013.

The festivities kicked off in the morning with a lion dance, followed by a speech from Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie, Chairman of Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd, who then presented cheques of HK$1 million to four charities affiliated with the Peninsula. The Make-a-Wish Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the St James Settlement Funeral Navigation Service were the charities awarded the generous cheques.

At night, all eyes were on the iconic facade of the Peninsula as guests glammed up for an exclusive party and headed outside to watch the charming illustrations of Hong Kong artist, Lee Chi Ching, displayed on the outside of the hotel and taking guests on a journey through time. The animation included several Hong Kong historical moments and led up to today. Guests then clinked glasses of champagne together to celebrate the Peninsula’s 85 years, and enjoyed the celebrations at the Peninsula’s finest establishments which had various themes to keep guests entertained.
