In one of the most comprehensive and important showings to date, the National Museum of Singapore will be hosting more than 140 priceless modern masterpieces from the iconic Musée d’Orsay in Paris, a repository of some of the world’s finest artwork.

The mega-exhibit at the Singapore National Museum, which is slated to run from October 26 2011 to February 5 next year, will see works from the likes of the greatest Realist, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters: Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas, to name a few.

Titled “Dreams & Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing & Photography of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris”, the exhibit will be presented in four main sections: Allegory and History, Man and Contemporary Life, Man and Nature and Solitude, in a bid to reflect the various philosophical concerns permeating the artwork of painters living through the advent of the Industrial Revolution in Europe.

The must-see exhibit is also a mark of the strong bilateral ties between Singapore and France. Commenting on the collaboration, Ms Lee Chor Lin, director of the National Museum of Singapore said: “Bringing these important works to Singapore involved working very closely with our French partners in the areas of curation and logistics.”

“This exhibition is the fruition of the Memorandum of Understanding on Museum Cooperation between France and Singapore. Through this partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, we hope to enhance the cultural ties and the museum professionals between our two countries.”

To make “Dreams & Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing & Photography from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris” come alive for visitors, the National Museum has prepared a series of programmes to complement the exhibition, including guided tours for adults and children, lectures, sketching workshops, films and performances.
