A touch of Europe comes to New York Fashion week with the spring summer 2014 menswear collection by designer Michael Bastian. The essentially elegant style of a french guy is enhanced with a delicate touch of engaging colours and beautifully engaging prints. The upbeat sentiment of the new designs goes hand in hand with the season. With masterfully tailored shorts and ananas printed trousers you are undoubtedly enjoying a vacation. Nevertheless Bastian also offers precisely cut formal pieces, with single button as well as double breasted jackets coming into play. For the same the colour selection is appropriately far more toned down, yet the lines are taken from the coveted classic men’s elements.
This season I wanted to do something more colorful, more joyous– play around a bit more with pattern mixing and unexpected styling, in a loose, easier, sexy way that typifies, to me, the best of French men’s style. The inspiration initially came from observing the French guys in my life, as well as movies such as The Red Balloon, The Dreamers, and the classic movies of Jacques Tati. I also drew inspiration from the incredible spirit and joyfulness of the late American designer Patrick Kelly– no one loved Paris more than he did. I often think the true essence of a place can only be reflected through the eyes and experiences of an outsider, and for me, Patrick’s vision of Paris– bright, romantic, frenetic, sexy and chic– is the one that stays with me – from Michael Bastian
Colours are French Blue, Balloon red, navy, slate gray, parrot green, washed fuchsia, cadet and of course the season’s defining white.
