Frederic Sai’s Spring Summer 2014 show tonight was one of those moments fans of Singapore fashion had waited for (no thanks to the delays of course). It was a breath of fresh air from a decadent night of mucking around with endless DQ Vodka and Marble Slab Creamery ice-cream.
This collection was Frederic at his most optimistic and joyous, drawing references from his previous pieces, the faint resonance of the past was dialed up by the fierce use of brighter hues.
It was fun for the audience, too, who yearned to be fed a pop art colour palette with the occasional floral pattern stamped on signature jackets. Almost acknowledging a celebration of spring, he opened with shirts emblazoned with Mondrian-inspired frames – more graphical than previous collections.
A sense of humour transpired in witty inclusions of highlighter trims, collars and socks; and oversized blouses had their fair share of attention too. As boyish as the short shorts were, it was evident this season at Frederic Sai femininity was key.
A notable number of looks had softer material use – the Sai silhouette explores proportions to greater extents with tweed skirts and ruffles. And let us not forget the geometric patchworks subtly slipped onto shirts, which was quite about the most masculine contrast to the monastic whites adopted elsewhere.
Frederic Sai is enjoying his simple pleasures this spring time. And there is nothing more rewarding than to stop and indulge on what he has achieved here.
