In a sign of the soaring demand for First Growth wines in China, the country is now home to a booming market for bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild… after they’ve been drunk.
The empty bottles are bought from restaurants and bars where the genuine article has actually been sampled, and then are filled up with an inferior substitute.
Fraudsters pay up to $400 for a single bottle of ‘second-hand’ Lafite in good condition. As a result, counterfeit wine is becoming a major issue for producers and drinkers alike.
