Art and Design

There has been a constant debate on the subject what separates art and design. Creator of an art piece is known as an Artist. Where as design in any form is the creative output of a Designer. Both the Artist and Designer create visual compositions using a shared knowledge base, but their reasons for doing so are entirely different. Some designers consider themselves artists, but few artists consider themselves designers.

Art and Design are not synonyms as few people confuse it to be just because they use a lot of the same techniques and appeal to the same aesthetic sense. Art and Design have different purpose, they are made differently, they are judged by different criteria, and they have different audiences.

ART

Art is a creative expression of the artist’s thought, and is not created with any specific utility in mind. For example-Marc Chagall in his paintings, he often painted violinists because he played the violin and also in memory of his uncle, who also played. He was also famous for his paintings of Russian-Jewish villages.

Salvador Dali as a child, he showed strange behavior and often interrupted his class in school. As he got older, he started to paint pictures that came from his dreams. His dreams and his paintings were scary and unreal. Paul Klee loved cats. He painted them a lot. Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He worked at many jobs, such as at an art gallery, a school, a bookstore, as a preacher, and at last, he became an artist. He didn’t have a very happy life. He painted sad paintings with poor people in them. His paintings were always very dark until he saw some colorful Japanese paintings.

Many artists chose to stand apart from worldly life. Some times their work was to oppose the moral code of the society. And when ever the artist has decided to showcase his work it has been on his own terms. The Artist though has and ends in his mind about the work but at the outset it is without preconditions. Art is judged in terms of beauty and truth and practical success is not the hallmark of art.

DESIGN

Design has a purpose. Design is the deliberate choice and layout of elements in a work of painting, drawing, photograph, collage, computer graphics or three dimensional forms such as furniture, appliances or furnishings, which acts as a prototype for production and commercial release. The Designer’s main aim is how to serve the client’s interests, how to convey the information.

Design, which considers the world’s purpose first and fits the work to that end. The designer follows proper design process keeping in mind the client’s requirement and the end use, size, scale and other factors. The design should turn to a tangible thing and should bring aesthetic sensibility, taste, and technical skills to bear on the production of the job. The design is considered good or worse on its purpose to serve the product.
