Royal Salute continued its support of Singapore’s polo calendar, with the Barclays Japan Cup 2014. The event was a highlight of the season for many of Singapore’s polo players and the Japanese community in Singapore with the Singapore Polo Club’s players participating in a grueling weekend of matches held on August 31. Royal Salute was a team sponsor and also the official whisky at the event.
In addition to the matches, guests were treated to a showcase of Taiko Drumming and Yabusame, a type of mounted archery in traditional Japanese archery that is considered more of an art form than a sport. Australian horse archer Katrina Kruse performed this showcase alongside Terushige Okamoto who also performed an opening ceremony called Hiki-me kabura-ya to cleanse the track of demons.
For the second time in the four years that the Singapore Polo Club has hosted the cup, an all-Japanese polo team participated in the event. Winning teams include Team Pocari Sweat for A Division, Team Lexus for B Division and Team SPC Black for C Division. The Most Valuable Player award went to Hiro Suzuki of Team Pocari Sweat and the Best Playing Pony award went to the pony Paul who belongs to Asad Jumabhoy.
