It was a milliner’s delight at Derby Day at the 2011 Melbourne Cup Carnival, with distinguished gents and ladies stepping out togged in their most fanciful hats. Also in attendance was one of Longines‘ loveliest ambassadors, Taiwanese supermodel and actress Lin Chi Ling.

The Swiss fine manufacture was the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s official timekeeper and timepiece. As part of the festivities, Longines invited star ambassador Lin Chi Ling as special guest at the Longines marquee, who arrived in style with an accompanying media contingent from Taiwan, Hong Kong and local Australian Chinese press.

A key highlight of the Longines Carnival program was the sponsorship of the premier Group 1 Race on AAMI Victoria Derby Day, the Longines Mackinnon Stakes. It was won by six-year-old gelding Glass Harmonium, rode by internationally acclaimed jockey Damien Oliver and trained by Michael Moroney. On the ninth anniversary of his brother’s passing, champ Damien Oliver paid tribute to his brother by blowing a kiss to the sunlit skies of the racing grounds.

The trophy was presented to Damien by Lin Chi Ling, together with Longines Vice President of Sales Mr Charles Villoz, in a nationally televised presentation. Lin Chi Ling also presented the inaugural Longines Award for Elegance, with the winner Sarah Schofield being awarded an exquisite Longines timepiece.

Also of great interest to the horological and racing enthusiasts present was the showcase of the Official Watch for the 2011 Melbourne Cup Carnival, the newly released Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph Heritage model. Featuring an exclusive self-winding chronograph movement, the blued steel column wheel is an updated version of a traditional technical system, resulting in a contemporary watch which is also steeped in the great tradition of mechanical timing.
