A scene from the trailer for the sixth season of “Community”
After getting canceled by NBC following its fifth season, “Community” is headed back to TV and computer screens on March 17. Its new home, Yahoo Screen, released a pretty epic trailer on Tuesday for the show’s sixth season.
Fashioned after the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” trailers, the trailer shows that Yahoo is trying to keep the series as true to the original as possible. There are copious amounts of Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) and the rest of the Greendale crew, Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs), Annie Edison (Alison Brie), Señor Chang (Ken Jeong), Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), doing over-the-top, crazy things, like Dean Pelton wearing an overly massive VR headset while walking in place, and Winger as a futuristic mayor with a ray gun and more.
Fortunately for “Community” fans, it looks like everyone’s favorite study group will be up to many of same antics we saw in the original series, even though a few notable characters are missing from the new show.
Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) and Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown) are out, replaced by Keith David and “Criminal Minds” alum Paget Brewster. Brewster is introduced by Dean Pelton as “the new Shirley” in the clip, which sends the gang into a tailspin as they argue over whether the group is getting “whiter.” David should help that a bit, and it looks like his character will fill the voids left by the departure of Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) and Buzz Hickey (Jonathan Banks) from previous seasons.
So will the new “Community” be any good? It’s looking promising, but we’ll have to wait to see for ourselves whether the reboot will pass the test or flunk out of school. “Community” will debut on Yahoo Screen on March 17, with new episodes coming every Tuesday through June.
