American actress and dancer Louise Brooks solidified her place in pop culture and fashion by popularizing the bobbed haircut. Brooks was synonymous with comedies and flapper films.

Before her retirement in 1935, the silent film star lit up the silver screen with feature films that included Pandora’s Box, A Girl in Every Port, Diary of a Lost Girl and Beggars of Life. Brooks’ trademark bob haircut contributed to a growing trend with women modeling their hair after hers and Colleen Moore. Short hair marked the era of “the new woman” where women became bolder and independent with their style.
