The trio comprising of Beyond Closet by Taeyong Ko, Leyii by Seunghee Lee and Resurrection by Juyoung Lee puts the spotlight on this specially commissioned project Concept Korea – a stab at this uprising fashion nation is a given in today’s pop culture climate.
So to expect opulence, visions of flamboyance and a polarised take on minimalist aesthetics is justified, and very much what Concept Korea brings to the table. There will always be a sliver of oversized furry coats, and a distressed patchwork of animal prints and OTT iconography.
What’s really invigorating about Concept Korea though, is the backend commentary of the East imitating West, imitating East; because the world is thus so small, we understand plaids and leather are possible in the Korean scene. The fierceness of Beyond Closet and Resurrection seemingly dramatic after all, is this curated collection’s antithesis: loudness before the quiet calm.
A suggestive eye of the storm is Leyii, whose understated use of accents casts a spellbinding grip on the audience. Concept Korea heralds the arrival of Nu-Asia, but don’t be slapping on any labels just yet: They will never ever be “Asian” as one can tell from today’s fashion landscape.
