Stop whatever you’re doing right meow. Earlier today, the Internet got into a frenzy when a series of shocking revelations has led to the discovery that the truly iconic Hello Kitty is NOT a cat. Now before you feel as though your childhood as been torn asunder, it is later revealed that this oversimplication is totally FALSE. In fact, creator Sanrio has now clarified to the website Kotaku that “Hello Kitty is a feline – just an anthropomorphic one”.

The jaw-dropping claims that sparked collective gasps everywhere was set off when Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist who is curating for an upcoming Hello Kitty retrospective at the Japanese American National Museum, was firmly corrected by when she described the cute icon as a cat (via LA Times):

“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”
