Distinctions need to be clarified between everyday usage of clothing-related terms and conceptual usage of the same words. Often confusion may be created by the connotations words have for us in everyday life as contrasted with their conceptual definition. Following are the different clothing terminology we use in our daily life.
1. ADORNMENT: Any decoration or alteration of the body’s appearance.
2. APPAREL: A body covering, specifically referring to actual garment construction. form fabric.
3. CLOTHING: Any tangible or material object connected to the human body.
4. COSTUME: A style of clothes belonging to a particular cultural or historical context(often used to refer to ethnic or historical clothing , as well as clothing designed for performances or rituals—drama, Halloween etc.).
5. DRESS: Verb; the act of altering appearance; noun: the total arrangement of outwardly detectible modifications of the body itself and all materials added to it.
6. FASHION: A style or styles accepted by a group of people for a certain period of time.
7. STYLE: A distinctive characteristic or way of expression. Style in clothing describes the lines that distinguish one form or shape from another.
8. WEARABLE ART: Use of clothing as a medium for artistic communication, to reflect the uniqueness and personal creativity of the artist and designer.
