The auction opened yesterday for a unique IWC Schaffhausen timepiece, a platinum Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition.

With a starting bid of 30,000 euros, the sale proceeds will benefit the Plastiki‘s long-term cause which is to highlight and help negate the damage caused by plastic pollution in our oceans. The Plastiki refers to a boat (bottom) constructed in large part from reclaimed plastic bottles, which is being taken from San Francisco to Sydney by a team of sailors led by David de Rothschild.

Specifically the proceeds will go to Adventure Ecology’s Foundation “Sculpt the Future”, a UK registered charity devoted to positive environmental change and the bearers of Plastiki’s on-going legacy after the trip has been completed.

Georges Kern CEO of IWC  Schaffhausen said: “David de Rothschild deserves all our respect and support for his inspiring ideas. We are delighted that we are on board with him on this spectacular adventure and able to make some contribution towards heightening awareness of the results of our human foot print.”

The watch itself is the platinum edition of the stainless steel timepiece given to the crew. The case is water resistant to 12 bars and the watch is driven by an IWC-manufactured 80110 calibre.

The movement is shielded against magnetic fields by a soft iron inner case and is protected against impact by a shock absorption system. On the back you’ll also find the expedition logo.

Bids can be made in increments of 100 to 400 Euros and the auction is set to close on August 7 between 4pm and 6pm CET.

The Plastiki is scheduled to arrive in Sydney on July 26 – and you can bid here on the auction.
